A yard is a unit of length (1 dimension).
A square yard is a unit of area (2 dimensions).
A cubic yard is a measure of volume (3 dimensions).
Therefore, a cubic yard’s dimensions are 1 yard x 1 yard x 1 yard.
Given that 1 yard = 3 feet, we can see that 1 cubic yard = 3ft * 3ft * 3ft = 27 cubic feet.
To calculate a dumpster’s capacity in cubic yards, multiply the dumpster’s length * width * height (measured in feet) and divide by 27.
For example, a typical 30 cubic yard dumpster’s interior dimensions are 7.25′ x 19.5′ x 5.75′ = 810 cubic feet. 810 cu. ft. / 27 = 30 cu. ft.
